Managing Asia’s healthcare waste and emissions remains challenging amid increasing climate risks

When most people ponder healthcare, what usually comes to mind is a trip to the doctor’s office, waiting in line, receiving proper treatment and medicine, and ultimately, eventual relief from one’s pain. What many overlook is the waste generated from each clinic or hospital visit, and the sheer amount of energy that keeps the healthcare sector’s wheels turning around the clock.  While vast amounts of energy are needed for energy-intensive medical equipment, general heating and cooling purposes, and to keep the lights on day and night, the main energy culprit is Scope 3 emissions, or those that directly stem from the sector’s supply chain, and waste that is improperly disposed of. There are some reasons for this: the region’s aging population – set to host<a href="https://www.prudential.com.sg/priority-programme/ascend/insights/asian-healthcare-poised-for-growth" rel="noopener noreferrer" title="https://www.prudential.com.sg/priority-programme/ascend/insights/asian-healthcare-poised-for-growth" target="_blank"> two-thirds</a> of the world’s population above the age of 65 by 2030 – combined with steady<a href="https://www.cell.com/heliyon/fulltext/S2405-8440%2824%2906167-X" rel="noopener noreferrer" title="https://www.cell.com/heliyon/fulltext/s2405-8440%2824%2906167-x" target="_blank"> economic growth</a> in recent years driving increased health spending.  The lack of proper<a href="https://documents1.worldbank.org/curated/en/361871639027510564/pdf/The-Impact-of-COVID-19-on-Plastic-Waste-Management-in-South-Asia-Challenges-and-Policy-Recommendations.pdf" rel="noopener noreferrer" title="https://documents1.worldbank.org/curated/en/361871639027510564/pdf/the-impact-of-covid-19-on-plastic-waste-management-in-south-asia-challenges-and-policy-recommendations.pdf" target="_blank"> waste management infrastructure</a> in the region, coupled with the immense amount of<a href="https://www.lowyinstitute.org/the-interpreter/asia-s-covid-waste-dilemma" rel="noopener noreferrer" title="https://www.lowyinstitute.org/the-interpreter/asia-s-covid-waste-dilemma" target="_blank"> medical waste generated</a> during the Covid-19 pandemic and resultant ongoing medical practices, has also led to unprecedented quantities of medical refuse. Asia is also particularly vulnerable to climate-related health risks. The<a href="https://www.worldweatherattribution.org/climate-change-made-the-deadly-heatwaves-that-hit-millions-of-highly-vulnerable-people-across-asia-more-frequent-and-extreme/" rel="noopener noreferrer" title="https://www.worldweatherattribution.org/climate-change-made-the-deadly-heatwaves-that-hit-millions-of-highly-vulnerable-people-across-asia-more-frequent-and-extreme/" target="_blank"> growing frequency and intensity</a> of heat-related illnesses, injuries and risks is sending more individuals to clinics and hospitals, with vulnerable populations often bearing the brunt.  This unending cycle of climate-induced suffering, treatment, and resultant medical waste and emissions is unsustainable, said John Graham, group chief executive officer of healthcare solutions provider Zuellig Pharma. “The escalating impact of climate change has had an undeniable impact on the health of societies – extreme weather events, air pollution, and increased incidence of vector-borne infectious diseases because of rising temperatures are all evidence of this,” Graham said. <h3 style="margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 8px;">Decarbonisation challenges</h3> Ensuring that vaccines and medication maintain their efficacy while being shipped is one reason why reducing emissions within the healthcare sector remains challenging, Graham notes.  “For instance, ensuring the integrity of temperature-sensitive vaccines and drugs is paramount to ensure they arrive uncompromised and in their intended state for end-users,” he said.  There is also energy-intensive equipment relied on to diagnose and treat patients – think machines such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) scanners – and heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems needed to maintain sterile environments. Another challenge is the lack of personnel to oversee emissions and waste, says Manjit Sohal, regional climate manager, Southeast Asia, Health Care Without Harm (HCWH), a non-profit that promotes sustainable healthcare practices. This, Sohal notes, makes it difficult to track and measure Scope 3 emissions, which is key to reduction efforts in the long term. “Healthcare facilities may lack standardised methods to collect accurate data such as patient travel habits, or waste management procedures conducted by third parties,” she said.  The large number of individuals involved in the healthcare supply chain also complicates efforts, as it involves numerous suppliers, manufacturers, and distributors. This makes tracking and reducing emissions a daunting task, Sohal notes, adding that 70 per cent of healthcare emissions originate from the supply chain alone. Because stakeholders within the healthcare supply chain are “dispersed” in nature – meaning that they are geographically spread out or not confined to one location – emissions are more difficult to track and reduce, Graham adds.  “This involves those from clinical trials, supply chain, all the way to distribution,” he said, pointing to the coordination needed between suppliers, distributors, healthcare providers and regulators across Asia and around the world to drive down Scope 3 emissions.  <h3 style="margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 8px;">The need for national policies </h3> Despite calls to reduce healthcare emissions, such as those by the World Health Organisation, which encouraged countries to<a href="https://www.who.int/news/item/09-11-2021-countries-commit-to-develop-climate-smart-health-care-at-cop26-un-climate-conference" rel="noopener noreferrer" title="https://www.who.int/news/item/09-11-2021-countries-commit-to-develop-climate-smart-health-care-at-cop26-un-climate-conference" target="_blank"> commit to developing</a> climate-resilient health systems at the 2021 United Nations’ Climate Change Conference in Glasgow (COP26), there are currently no legally binding laws globally or in Asia that mandate emissions or waste reductions in the healthcare sector. There are, however, some frameworks and roadmaps aimed at reducing carbon footprint. One is the United Nations-backed<a href="https://climatechampions.unfccc.int/system/race-to-zero/#:~:text=Race%20to%20Zero%20is%20a,%2C%20fairer%2C%20net%20zero%20world." rel="noopener noreferrer" title="https://climatechampions.unfccc.int/system/race-to-zero/#:~:text=race%20to%20zero%20is%20a,%2c%20fairer%2c%20net%20zero%20world." target="_blank"> Race to Zero</a> campaign led by HCWH, where healthcare institutions representing over 14,000 facilities have pledged to halve emissions by 2030 and reach net zero by 2050. Another is the Global Road Map for Health Care Decarbonisation<a href="https://healthcareclimateaction.org/roadmap" rel="noopener noreferrer" title="https://healthcareclimateaction.org/roadmap" target="_blank"> initiative</a>, also led by HCWH and design and engineering firm Arup, which provides a structured approach for the healthcare sector to reduce emissions. While these initiatives signal some progress, the healthcare industry may not see true change until mandates at a national level come into play, argues Sohal.  “Progress needs to extend beyond individual facilities – it has to become a systemic endeavour. National governments and health ministries need to mandate emissions reporting, monitoring, and the transition to sustainable, low-carbon alternatives within the entire healthcare system,” she said. “A tertiary public health facility in the Philippines, for example, cannot independently decide to transition, as such decisions typically come with resource implications that need to undergo national government approval. This ‘centralised’ decision-making process is common across many Southeast Asian countries, where healthcare systems are heavily influenced by national policies and regulations.”   The escalating impact of climate change has had an undeniable impact on the health of societies – extreme weather events, air pollution, and increased incidence of vector-borne infectious diseases because of rising temperatures are all evidence of this. John Graham, group chief executive officer, Zuellig Pharma   Taking waste and emissions into account The lack of regulation puts the onus on healthcare solutions companies to find ways of reducing their own emissions and waste. For example, Zuellig Pharma reduces its Scope 3 emissions by implementing greenhouse gas emissions tracking and monitoring into its processes and evaluates the sustainability of business partners through compliance-based questionnaires. This ensures that the company prioritises working with suppliers and partners who have demonstrated progress in reducing their carbon footprint, Graham notes, adding that the company has also introduced more electric vehicles within its fleet, and technology to insulate cold trucks and reduce air-conditioning energy use by up to 30 per cent. Doing so, he adds, has helped to reduce transportation and fuel costs, packaging waste, and led to improved inventory management and lowered emissions. “We also optimise our load to maximise the capacity of each delivery, and use a blended model of contracted, owned and brokered trucks to ensure that the fewest number of vehicles are used while ensuring a continued supply of critical healthcare products,” Graham explained. Zuellig Pharma has also found ways of recycling medical packaging waste. The company partnered up with the Business Council for Sustainable Development (BCSD) Malaysia and Baxter Healthcare in 2022, launching an initiative called the “Jom Recycle – Plastic Recycling in Homecare” that sees them recycling non-contaminated renal dialysis bags from patients’ homes for recycling into secondary raw materials.  Graham notes that the initiative has diverted more than 500 kilogrammes of high-grade plastic waste from landfills to recycling facilities in Malaysia. More than 260 metric tonnes of recyclable, non-clinical plastic waste fill up Malaysia’s landfills each year.  Zuellig Pharma has recorded a 24 per cent reduction in landfill-destined waste in the last two years and is on track to achieve zero waste by 2030, according to its <a href="https://edge.sitecorecloud.io/zuelligphar3c90-zpcms-prod-4532/media/Project/Corporate/About-Us/Sustainability/zuellig-pharma-healthcare-pharmaceutical-sustainability-report-2023.pdf" rel="noopener noreferrer" title="https://edge.sitecorecloud.io/zuelligphar3c90-zpcms-prod-4532/media/project/corporate/about-us/sustainability/zuellig-pharma-healthcare-pharmaceutical-sustainability-report-2023.pdf" target="_blank">2023 sustainability report</a>. <h3 style="margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 8px;">The delicate balance</h3> With the focus firmly pinned on patient health, the region must resort to quick and easy decarbonisation wins while looking for longer-term solutions. This can start with facilities being sustainably built from the ground up, Sohal says, noting that features like ample ventilation and natural lighting, and energy-efficient machines can go a long way. Existing healthcare facilities can also consider telemedicine, or remote and real-time patient-doctor video consultations, to reduce their Scope 3 emissions. Patients can then pay for the consultation and prescribed medications online, which are either delivered directly to the patient’s home or made available for pickup at a pharmacy or healthcare facility.  One 2021<a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8004323/" rel="noopener noreferrer" title="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/pmc8004323/" target="_blank"> study</a> found that every virtual medical consultation can reduce between 0.70 and 372 kgs of carbon dioxide equivalent. “Every time someone goes to the hospital, this results in emissions from transport or supplies such as single-use plastics or products used to examine outpatients. Some of these consultations can be conducted remotely or online, which can avoid emissions associated with patients going to the hospital,” Sohal says. “As demand for healthcare services grows, transitioning to telemedicine for outpatients who do not require hospital visits is a viable option.” But until there are firmer regulations that mandate healthcare emission reductions, the region’s industry must continue striking a careful balance between safeguarding patient health and keeping waste and emissions low. “The [healthcare] industry needs to continue working together to innovate and invest in solutions that reflect modern priorities, and continue to build and invest in strategy, material policies and technology. Zuellig Pharma partners with ACEN RES to supply 100% renewable energy to two key distribution facilities in the Philippines

Zuellig Pharma, Asia’s leading healthcare solutions company, has recently signed a new strategic partnership with ACEN Renewable Energy Solutions (ACEN RES), the retail electricity arm of ACEN, to supply 100% renewable energy to power two major distribution facilities in the Philippines – the Santa Rosa Distribution Center and Canlubang Distribution Center. With the shift to 100% renewable energy from ACEN, the Santa Rosa and Canlubang Distribution Centers combined will reduce its carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 10,600 tons each year, equivalent to the amount of CO2 absorbed by 92,739 trees in their lifetime (approximately 30 years). Alongside the technological advancement, the healthcare industry has to keep up with evolving expectations of consumers who are placing greater priority on personal wellness and tailored experiences.  There has also been an increased emphasis in ensuring healthcare access and equity in the region and globally. Rising inequality in Asia, the impact climate change will have on population health and geopolitical headwinds are all issues that will pose challenges to the future of healthcare.  Ensuring that quality healthcare remains affordable and accessible for both developed and developing markets, while mitigating the knock-on effects the industry has on the environment will create a greater need for the industry to look towards greener practices in its operations.    <h4 style="color: #212529; background-color: #ffffff; margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0.5rem; line-height: 1.2;"><cite>With increasing concerns about climate change and sustainability, how is Zuellig Pharma addressing the call for the healthcare industry to prioritise sustainability? What specific initiatives or strategies has the company undertaken to reduce its carbon footprint and promote sustainability within the healthcare sector?</cite>  </h4> The environmental impact of the pharmaceutical lifecycle, from drug development to transport, distribution and disposal has long been a pain point for the industry. As a leading healthcare solutions company, we recognise the need to introduce sustainable solutions while at the same time ensure that we are constantly working towards making healthcare more accessible for communities in Asia. This includes embedding sustainable solutions throughout different parts of our business, including the use of renewable energy, electric vehicles and the use of transport management systems to operate more sustainably in more complex logistics networks.  We’ve reduced our Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 42% since 2021, with the goal of being carbon neutral by 2030, and have taken active steps towards greening our fleets and facilities, including the modernisation of our vehicles with new technologies to capture emissions and use fuel more efficiently. We also use electricity powered equipment in our warehouses and have moved most of our regional services from on-premises hosting to cloud-based data centres.  Zuellig Pharma also recognises that there is a need for players across the value chain to work together to promote sustainability across operations. This is why we also prioritise working with suppliers who demonstrate their progress and ability to reduce their carbon footprint, and why we have started to incorporate sustainability criteria within our supplier selection and contracts so that we can align with partners to achieve our carbon reduction targets.    <h4 style="color: #212529; background-color: #ffffff; margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0.5rem; line-height: 1.2;"><cite>In light of your extensive experience in the pharmaceutical and healthcare sectors, what steps do you believe pharmaceutical and healthcare organisations can take to enhance access to healthcare while also introducing more sustainable practices? Are there any successful case studies or approaches that you can highlight?</cite>  </h4> Having a strong vision and a clear direction for sustainability goals should be one of the defining pillars of any organisation’s strategy to maximise the positive impact it can bring to stakeholders, communities and the planet.  For healthcare organisations in particular, it is important that such a vision encompasses a multi-faceted approach to sustainability. Sustainability has never been a one-dimensional issue, and organisational strategy should reflect this accordingly.  It is also important to work closely with likeminded organisations to ensure that these goals can be made a reality. Prioritising sustainable procurement processes across the supply chain, and working towards meeting compliance with sustainability regulations are all ways in which companies can deliver real, tangible impact in the industry.  Investing in the right technology and solutions to make operations more sustainable is also another way in which companies can introduce more sustainable practices. For example, we introduced a sophisticated packaging solution – eZCooler, to significantly extend the storage time of temperature-sensitive products using a unique thermal isolation system that is both reusable and 100% recyclable, without relying on external energy sources. This proved to be instrumental during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, where cold-chain solutions coming to the forefront as vaccines urgently needed to be delivered to communities all around Asia.     <h4 style="color: #212529; background-color: #ffffff; margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0.5rem; line-height: 1.2;"><cite>Zuellig Pharma has a long history in Asia, and you've been at the helm as CEO since 2020. Could you share some insights into the company's evolving journey and its commitment to furthering access to healthcare for the Asian population through climate-conscious means? What milestones or achievements are you particularly proud of in this regard?</cite>  </h4> Since 2016, we’ve set out to embed sustainability into every facet of our operations at Zuellig Pharma, adhering to a sustainability framework that is guided by four key themes – Setting the Highest Standards of Integrity, Nurturing Talent, Improving Health Outcomes and Respecting the Environment.  To date, we have been awarded the Platinum medal by sustainability ratings specialist EcoVadis for the third year in a row. The award is the highest accolade to be awarded to a company for its sustainability efforts and positions Zuellig Pharma in the top 1% of all assessed companies worldwide, scoring above industry averages for all pillars. We have also rigorously improved our sustainability initiatives year-on-year in order to continue driving impact for our stakeholders, using rigorous ESG metrics and developing action plans to address the gaps identified in previous assessments. We are one of more than 4,000 companies across the globe to have our targets approved by Science Based Target Initiatives (SBTi), in line with our commitment to reduce direct and indirect Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions across our operations by 42% and reducing GHG emissions across our supply chains by 25% by 2030. In 2023, we were also awarded the highest score obtained in our activity group from the international non-profit organisation Carbon Disclosure Protocol (CDP). This represents the second highest level of maturity a company can reach, and ranks us above the Asia average, Global average, and Road Transport average. These accolades are testament to how sustainability remains fundamental to our business, and how we’ve steadily worked towards the long-term goals we’ve set out for the organisation.     <h4 style="color: #212529; background-color: #ffffff; margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0.5rem; line-height: 1.2;"><cite>The COVID-19 pandemic has brought unprecedented challenges to the healthcare industry. How has Zuellig Pharma navigated these challenges, and what lessons have you learned in terms of adapting to unforeseen global crises and maintaining the supply chain for critical healthcare products?</cite>  </h4> COVID-19 revealed the vulnerabilities in supply chains, with countries and businesses battling to manage massive disruptions. Geopolitical and macroeconomic headwinds have also resulted in a slowing of global growth, which has had effects on diverging supply chains.  Asia’s diverse and fragmented market with varying regulatory standards and large rural communities has further underscored the need for supply chain resilience, to ensure that access to healthcare and life-saving medicines are not crippled by sudden supply or demand spikes.  During the pandemic, our existing strong partnerships with manufacturers, governments, regulatory bodies, international organisations and the private sector enabled us to accelerate COVID-19 vaccination roll-outs, whilst maintaining access to healthcare. Zuellig Pharma supported access to over 150 million COVID-19 vaccine doses across Asia, engaging over 400 government stakeholders across the globe to carve out vaccine stock allocation to Asia.  We believe that building good, reliable distribution networks through public-private partnerships will continue to be essential to healthcare delivery, and working with local governments and cross-sector authorities will ensure that the delivery of drugs can be maintained even amidst the most turbulent times.  On top of this, it is also important that industry players develop innovative solutions that prioritise patient care, education and affordability through strategic collaborations. Initiatives such as end-to-end vaccination programmes, named patient programmes and enhanced disease awareness and management, which are part of Zuellig Pharma’s Patient Care solutions, will only be possible through a multi-stakeholder approach. By working collaboratively with authorities towards the shared goal of strengthening health systems and finding more opportunities for convergence and partnership, the industry can be prepared to operate through and beyond the next global crisis.    <h4 style="color: #212529; background-color: #ffffff; margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0.5rem; line-height: 1.2;"><cite>Given the geopolitical tensions and macroeconomic headwinds in the region, what strategies has Zuellig Pharma employed to ensure its business resilience and continued growth in such a dynamic and potentially volatile environment?</cite>  </h4> As a business that has been operating for more than a century, we have deep expertise and knowledge of healthcare systems and the landscape in Asia, which has enabled us to develop and refine best-in-class innovative solutions that expand access to healthcare for the markets we operate in.  As we continue to develop new innovative solutions to address Asia’s unmet healthcare needs, we will continue to modernise our supply chain infrastructure and develop unique data and analytics offerings that help our clients and customers improve product and care delivery for patients.  We are also working to accelerate our digital capabilities by developing omnichannel platforms, new digital engagement tools with healthcare professionals and technology that can help to accelerate growth and efficiencies within the business.  Most importantly, we will continue to drive sustainability efforts to ensure that our growth is both sustainable and climate conscious, so that we can make good on our commitment to the communities we serve and the world we live in.

Zuellig Pharma awarded EcoVadis Platinum Medal for third consecutive year and rated leader in carbon management

In addition to the platinum certification, EcoVadis has also rated Zuellig Pharma as a leader in carbon management, which demonstrates its best-in-class greenhouse gas (GHG) management system and strong decarbonisation ambition with approved science-based targets. In 2023, Zuellig Pharma received an overall EcoVadis score of 82, compared to a global and Asia average of 48 and 33 points respectively. Zuellig Pharma’s work in human rights and sustainable procurement, alongside its work to reduce carbon emissions was recognised by EcoVadis in particular, placing it among the top 1% of all organisations evaluated. Since 2020, Zuellig Pharma has achieved marked improvement in its overall EcoVadis score with a total increase of 18 points, while other organisations increased their scores by 1.7 points on average in the same duration. The company has been rated consistently above the industry standard across all four pillars which include environment, labour and human rights, ethics and sustainable procurement. “This recognition by EcoVadis for the third year in a row is a testament to our long-standing commitment to sustainability, as we strive to be a world-class healthcare solutions company that builds a healthier future for Asia,” said John Graham, CEO, Zuellig Pharma. “A major contributor to the success of our sustainability efforts is ensuring year-on-year improvements across key metrics and diligently building an action plan to address the gaps identified from the previous assessment,” he added. As part of its efforts to prioritise human rights and sustainable procurement, the company launched a pilot programme “Elevating Worker Voice” in 2022, to monitor and address any labour risks in its supply chain in three markets including Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines. Leveraging its partnership with The Mekong Club, a non-profit organisation specialising in detecting and eliminating modern slavery in Asia, a survey was conducted to understand the conditions faced by workers engaged by Zuellig Pharma’s suppliers. With the survey results, debriefs were conducted with suppliers, alongside collaborative efforts to address shortfalls in practices. This year, Zuellig Pharma plans to establish regional guidelines for the inclusion of worker surveys as part of supplier audits and implement the programme in sites across the region. In 2022, the company also successfully reduced its overall greenhouse gas emissions by 31% and made progress against its Science Based Targets through initiatives such as the greening of its fleets and facilities, the migration of regional services to cloud-based data centres and partnerships with suppliers to drive emission and waste reduction. Zuellig Pharma Singapore and GSK Establish Vaccine Distribution Hub to Improve Asia’s Access to Vaccines

Zuellig Pharma, one of the largest healthcare services groups in Asia, today announced that it has entered into an agreement with global biopharma company, GSK, to help set up its first vaccine distribution hub in the region. This allows for better product visibility to address the growing challenge of counterfeit healthcare products in Asia.   The vaccine distribution hub will adopt a sea transport model to reduce its supply chain carbon footprint, resulting in reduced transportation carbon emissions by at least 30%, compared to air transport. Zuellig Pharma recognised with a score of “A-” on CDP supplier engagement in industry first

Zuellig Pharma, one of the largest healthcare services groups in Asia, has announced its score of “A-” for Supplier Engagement from global carbon disclosure platform <a href="https://www.cdp.net/en">CDP</a>, making it the first and only company worldwide in its activity group to receive this recognition. The SER acknowledges that purchasing organisations have the potential to incentivise significant environmental changes in their supply chain through supplier engagement best practices. A significant portion of Zuellig Pharma’s efforts to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions focuses on Scope 3 emissions through procurement policies. The company incorporates sustainability criteria within its supplier selection processes and contracts and prioritises working with suppliers that demonstrate commitment to reducing their carbon footprint. Suppliers are required to report the carbon impact of activities, and the company’s largest suppliers have environmental targets that Zuellig Pharma maps against its own carbon reduction targets.  Sustainability initiatives with suppliers to reduce Scope 3 emissions include the use of biofuel and newer generation engines, driver training and monitoring to promote emission-reducing driving habits, innovative insulation in cold trucks to reduce the use of aircon blowers, aerodynamic improvement to achieve fuel savings, and constant refinement of asset utilisation rates and routes. These efforts are tracked and assessed on the IntegrityNext platform, which provides insights on suppliers' sustainability practices and enables Zuellig Pharma to flag improvement areas and mitigate issues through ongoing dialogue and education. In addition, Zuellig Pharma runs Sustainability Development Programmes to drive concrete and time-bound actions to improve sustainability performance. It also works with suppliers on one-off sustainability initiatives, such as co-developing the use of solar panels to power refrigeration units in delivery vehicles in Malaysia and launching an electric-powered fleet in South Korea to reduce its carbon footprint and increase fuel efficiency. Organisation-wide commitment to reducing greenhouse gases recognised by CDP The score of “B” on Climate Change awarded by CDP for 2022 recognises Zuellig Pharma’s commitment to reducing absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 42% as well as a 25% reduction in absolute scope 3 GHG emissions by 2030, in addition of its goal to be carbon neutral in its own operations by that year. These targets have also been validated and approved by the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The company has gained a comprehensive view of its total direct, downstream and upstream GHG and identified opportunities for emissions reduction by screening all Scope 3 categories listed by the GHG Protocol to identify those relevant to its activities. This has enabled it to initiate actions such as: <ul> <li> Reducing energy use from IT infrastructure by moving most of its regional services from on-premises hosting to cloud-based Microsoft Azure data centres, achieving greater energy efficiency of up to 93% and greater carbon efficiency of up to 98%.  </li> <li> Rolling out solar panel installation starting in Taiwan and Vietnam with installation planned for Singapore, Thailand, and Cambodia in 2023. This has so far generated 5.4M kWh, covering 5% of electricity needs. </li> <li> Switching to electric vehicles – The company is actively moving towards greener transport fleets in selected markets. By 2030, internal combustion engine (ICE) delivery vehicles will be phased out in Singapore, while Korea will use electric vehicles for all short-distance deliveries. </li> </ul> Apart from CDP ratings, Zuellig Pharma’s sustainability efforts have also been recognised with the EcoVadis Platinum certification for two years running, placing the company at the top 1% of all assessed companies worldwide and ranking it #1 globally in their industry amongst 2,800 logistics leaders.
